The on line period has started for second, third and forth year students, who are scattered in studios and offices all over the world doing their part-time internships as well as receiving their lessons on line. This year we have students in studios such as Zaha Hadid in London, David Chipperfield in Berlin, Studio Mumbai in India, Enric Ruiz-Geli (Cloud9) in Barcelona… and many others.

All students taking Structures courses visited the Instituto Eduardo Torroja, where they were shown not only the emblematic buildings and pavilions, but also the premises where materials and structural elements are tested. Being the IET close to the Nudo de la Paloma footbridge, one of its authors, José Luís Bellod, an engineer working at CESMA, gave them a lecture on its structure. The afternoon was devoted to visiting and analysing three new footbridges in Madrid Rio: las pasarelas Gemelas, el Puente de Arganzuela y la pasarela del Principado de Andorra.

There´s a new building on campus. And the 4th-year architecture students in Construction Workshop III built it themselves. Organized by professors Fermín Blanco and Ruth Vega, and with the support of Rehasa Esturcutras, the students have built a temporary pavillion, learning and implementing the basics of steel construction, and drywall and light steel framing. The weather cooperated, thankfully, and we now have a small example of light construction and teamwork right in front of us. Well done, all!

All students taking Structures courses participated in a workshop whose aim was to learn and understand how the structures of bridges work. Each group of students fabricated a laser-cut model of a bridge using different typologies, solutions and materials. The models were presented, explained and tested, loading them and taking them to structural failure in order to analyze their behaviour.

IE Architecture students have just completed a 3 day intensive workshop in collaboration with students from the Paris program of the Illinois Institute of Technology, and IIT professor Andrew Schachman, along with IE Professors Sara Hernández, Romina Canna, and  director David Goodman.  The workshop dealt with the topic of surface and its potential uses. Students first studied the traditional Segovian technique of esgrafiado, led by local artisans, and then devised new approaches to surface based on their earlier precedents.
